Multicultural Children’s Book Day Review

Today, January 29, 2021, is Multicultural Children’s Book Day!

Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams is written by Gwen Jackson and illustrated by Lissa Calvert. I was gifted a copy of the book for Multicultural Children’s Book Day.

The Story:

Winter is coming, but the little black bear, Lump Lump, isn’t ready to go to sleep! With the help of his mother, the wise Blue Bird, and his forest friends, Lump Lump gathers materials for Spider Woman to weave him a blanket of dreams. Inspired by Navajo/Dine culture and folklore, and featuring the work of famed weaver Barbara Teller Ornelas, this beautiful tale of family and friends takes the reader on a journey through the rich traditions and spectacular landscapes of the Southwest.

My Review:

I loved learning more about the Navajo/Dine culture and folklore through this accessible story. Although the length of the story makes this book an unlikely read aloud choice for my two children (ages 3 and almost 5), I think it would work well in an upper elementary school classroom. I enjoyed the themes of working together, kindness, and gratitude in Lump Lump’s story. Gwen Jackson’s illustrations are vibrant and rich. I especially love how she illustrated the dream blanket based on real art by sixth generation Navajo weaver Barbara Teller Ornelas.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/29/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.

Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
